Is the Costco-size pack actually cheaper for your family?

By the StockPock team

The giant pack almost always costs less per roll, per bag or per bottle. That part is true. Whether it saves your family money is a different question, and it depends on what happens after you get it home.

The big pack is only cheaper if you use it

A big family can get through a giant pack of paper towels in a month. For them it's an easy win. A smaller household might still be working through that same pack next year.

With things that don't go bad, that just means your money is sitting on a shelf. With food, it's worse. Half a giant bag of apples in the trash can wipe out everything you saved by buying big.

Three things the price tag doesn't mention

So when is the big one worth it?

When it's something you use constantly, it keeps well, and you have room for it. Toilet paper, trash bags and laundry detergent in a busy house are the usual winners.

It's fine to buy the smaller one

Sometimes the regular size is the right call, even when the giant one is "cheaper." You're buying what your family needs. You're not trying to win a contest for the fullest garage.

A quick gut check

Before the big pack goes in the cart, ask: will we finish this before it goes bad, gets forgotten, or we get sick of it?

If the answer is an easy yes, go big. If you have to think about it, the smaller one is probably your size.
